Photos from the Summer excursion 2005
This years summer excursion were destinated to the northern parts of Sweden, and to Finland. Quite unusual, we didn't use our own trainset, but used ordinary trains in Sweden, and a hired DM7 trainset in Finland.
As usual, we did visit a couple of cultural sights, e.g. Gammelstads Kyrkby, which is on UNESCO's list of world heritage.
We did also pay a visit at the Iron Ore Railway Museum nearby Gammelstad, where we had a trip with this Hilding-Carlsson railcar Yd no. 332.
To get to haparanda, we had to use a bus, but in Haparanda, our hired trainset were waiting for us in front of the monumental station.
We left Sweden, and on the bridge over the Torneälv, which forms the borderline between Sweden and Finland, wemade a photostop. The front of the train is exactly at the point of the border. Please notice the double track (one for the swedish standard gauge, and one for the Finnish broad gauge).
In Tornio, at the Finnish site of the border, we managed to see the gauge changing plant, where freighcars get changed their gauge to ensure rail transport between Finland and the rest of Europe, without reloading of goods.
One of the first sights in Finland, were the steelworks of Rautaruukki in Raahe, Where we got the traditional group photo with all the participants in front of our trainset.
On our way, we made some nice photos in typically, beautifully Finnish surroundings....
...But from time to another, we were forced to let the ordinary trains pass by.
Of course, we did also get time for sightseeings in the various towns, were we stayed overnight, as here in Rauma, where the city hall looked very beautifull in the evening light
In Haapamäki, we did visit the big locomotive park, on our way to Helsinki, where our excursion had its end.
Remember the Summer excursion 2006, which will bring us to Gotland. More information is to be found at this site as soon as the programme is ready.
