What is NoJK ?

The Nordic Railway Club (NoJK) was founded in 1988 with the purpose of arranging exciting excursions of high quality in the Scandinavian Countries. The main emphasis on these excursions is laid on railway, but other means of transport, as ships and tramcars are often part of the club excursions.
As the club is Danish a great deal of the excursions take place locally in Denmark but at least once a year, an excursion is arranged to Sweden and/or Norway, most frequently of a duration of 4-8 days.

The club members are kept informed about the club arrangements via the club magazine "Nordisk Jernbanenyt" ("Nordic Railway News"), published 6 times a year, and in addition to the information about the Club activities, it contains different interesting articles and accounts of journeys as well as news about what is happening by the railway in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The cost of a membership in NoJK is currently 150.00 DKK for a single membership, and 175.00 DKK for a family membership.

Originally NoJK was ment as an excursion association, which intended to use partly public transport and partly hired trains/busses/ships. In 1989, however, the club took over a diesel engine train type 86 from the State Railway of Norway consisting of a dmu and a matching driving compartment coach with postoffice and a luggage section, BM 86.28 and BDFS 86.76.
After this aqusition, the former postoffice was converted into a kitchen, and the passenger compartments of the BDFS 86.76 has been equiped with tables, so that both cold and hot dishes can be served during trips.
This dmu-set has since been a great asset for NoJK, and plays an important part in NoJK's yearly summer excursion to Sweden and/or Norway.

Every year an excurtion of a duration of 4-6 days is arranged in which the train is used as a means of transport and as a restaurant, while a number of sights of both technical/historical and general cultural importance is visited. At night hotels are used. These annual summer excursions have gradually aquired a group of loyal fans and must be considered one of the most important activities.

However, NoJK also arranges quite a few excursions of a more specifically railwaic related nature, and on both the summer excursions and the other excursions other means of transport besides the clubs own train are used. The trains of other Railwayclubs have naturally been used several times, but also bus trips have been usen in cases were it would be too expensive or too time-consuming to use a train. for example an excursion was made to Värmland in 1995 with one of the TMY-locomotives of the private railway-company "Tågåkeriet" from Kristinehamn to Filipstad and back, but with a bus from Copenhagen to Kristinehamn and back. This excursion was such a succes that the Concept will be used again to other interesting destinations within a "week-end's distance".
